Magnetic Velvet

This project responds to a brief set for our class by Philips Design. Their research team wanted to see how textile designers could imagine solutions to potential problems of the future. I was inspired by the rare possibility of a massive solar wind storm. My

concept was a fabric-based device that exhibited direct changes it sensed in the surrounding magnetic environment.

The construction process was challenging. Integrating steel fibers into a textile surface restricts the influence that magnetic fields can have on them. I eventually devised a way to suspend them.
